An Introduction to Bow Tie Risk Analysis

Thursday, October 25: Janet Abernathy, University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. The Bowtie Method is a visual risk assessment that can be used to describe causal relationships between threats, hazards, and consequences. It is a picture that incorporates actions that can prevent the hazard from occurring as well as actions that can be put in place to reduce the consequences if a hazard occurs. It is a tool for proactive risk assessment and is useful in determining gaps in managing risk and for identifying performance improvement opportunities.

Having been a nurse for more than 30 years, and a Quality professional since 2004, Janet is experienced in leading, implementing and teaching performance improvement in both acute inpatient and ambulatory care. She is currently obtaining her Masters in Nursing Education at the University of New Mexico.
